Enabel has financed the construction of mini-grids in Mozambique through its RERD2 programme but their operational and financial sustainability on the long term is not yet assured. To overcome this situation, Enabel requests MARGE support to establish the SMILE Framework as a structured system of manuals and operational tools that ensures the sustainable operation of mini-grids, protects the long-term value of assets, and strengthens their attractiveness for future private sector engagement.

Triple Jump is an independent investment manager focused on impact investing in emerging markets. It targets financial sector development and invests in institutions that service the bottom of the pyramid. Triple Jump requests the services of MARGE to support it in the Smart Outcomes Fund (SOF) Committee of CEI Africa that manages two funds: The SOF fund for productive use of renewable energy 2) The RBF fund for renewable energy minigrids.

InfraCredit developed a DRE Lending Toolkit. The Toolkit provides the procedures, bankability, and due diligence requirements for DRE projects to conform with InfraCredit’s credit eligibility criteria, using lessons learnt and evidence-based data from its pipeline of DRE projects. MARGE supported RebelGroup with technical and engineering aspects of the toolkit.

Within FCDO’s Transforming Energy Access programme (TEA), the Transforming Humanitarian Energy Access (THEA) programme, delivered by Mercy Corps, in partnership with GPA and Ashden, aims at delivering transformative action on clean energy access in humanitarian settings. MARGE's role is to support activities to identify, promote and scale up alternative, sustainable energy delivery models in contexts of forced displacement mainly in Ethiopia, Uganda and Somalia.

Enabel wishes to equip its coordination office in South Ubangi province with a complete solar photovoltaic system. MARGE supports the technical design of the project, its dimensioning, the drafting of technical documents, and its execution's monitoring.

MARGE realised four feasibility studies covering technical, economic and financial aspects of  : 1) A unit for converting rice husks into briquettes and/or electricity, 2)  A unit for producing CNSL (Cashew Net Shell Liquid, or cashew nut shell oil), 3) Two biodigesters for producing biogas from cassava waste and chicken manure.

The support to Enabel has 2 main objectives: 1) Supporting Enabel with drawing lessons of various aspects related to the preparation, construction, supervision and operation of 5 mini-grids in Zambézia and Nampula Provinces (project organisation, tendering, contracts, involvement of FUNAE etc.) 2) Supporting Enabel with the development of a strategy for the stimulation of productive uses of energy in the RERD2 mini-grids and in future Enabel projects.

The aim of this pre-feasibility study was to provide KfW with detailed guidelines for identifying one or more sites among the cities of Bukavu, Goma, Uvira, Kisangani, and Matadi/Boma and to outline a proposed intervention to improve electricity supply. This study would then enable KfW to launch a more detailed feasibility study on the proposed intervention with a view to implementation.

The objectives of this assignment, carried out in association with Aiguasol and Azimut360, are 1. to conduct an updated contextual analysis (SWOT) of the electricity sub-sector focusing on mini-grids, including effective and sustainable scaling options 2. to assess the relevance and feasibility to develop a support programme including a substantial financing component with the objective to accelerate rural electrification with minigrids to achieve a goal of 30MW capacity installed by 2029.
